Chin Augmentation

While I do not feel it is appropriate to suggest procedures to patients, chin enhancement surgery is one that can greatly improve facial harmony. There is a balance between the tip of the nose, lower lip, and chin. Often a patient will feel that the nose is a little too big when in fact the problem is a short or weak chin. This procedure is often performed in combination with nose reshaping, and to enhance the results of face and necklift surgery. Not only does this procedure make the chin stronger, it can make the neck seem deeper and better defined.

On examination, I will check your jaw and teeth, to insure that the appearance is caused solely by a lack of projection. Computer imaging can demonstrate how you might look following this procedure.

The procedure is done under Monitored Sedation with an anesthesiologist to insure your comfort and safety. You will not feel or see any of the procedure. The operation takes 45 minutes. A small incision is made either under the chin or inside the mouth behind the lower lip. An implant of silastic is placed along the border of your existing bone in a small pocket. The two different approaches have advantages and disadvantages, and I will discuss them with you before the procedure so that we may decide together. You may have a small band aid under your chin, and can expect some swelling.

Following the procedure, you are observed in recovery for an hour. You will be given pain relievers and antibiotics to take at home. If you choose the incision inside the mouth, a mouth rinse will also be prescribed for after each meal. Stitches are removed in 5 days. A week off of work is preferable. You should avoid hard chewing for the first two weeks to avoid displacing the implant.

Patients are uniformly impressed with the natural results and overall changes accomplished with this simple technique. Do not feel embarrassed if I mention this procedure during your consultation. It is only to better inform you of your options. You will never feel pressured to do anything you do not feel comfortable with.
